Radio broadcaster arrested for extortion

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A radio broadcaster was held for extorting P350,000 from a politician in Valencia, Bukidnon on Friday.
The suspect, identified only as “Liezel” was arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation-Northern Mindanao after she received P350,000 from Guillermo de Asis in Barangay Lumbo.
The NBI said Liezel demanded P500,000 from De Asis so she would stop criticizing him in her radio program.
De Asis is a member of the city council and is running for mayor in the May elections.
He said Liezel settled for P350,000 after he told her that he could not afford the P500,000 that she was asking.
“I decided to ask the help of the NBI after she promised to stop criticizing me if I give her money,” De Asis said.
Journalists based in Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro City and Kidapawan in Cotabato said they received information that the suspect was hired to spread lies against De Asis and make him appear corrupt.
