Senator urges action to curb violence in schools

MANILA, Philippines — After a Grade 8 student in Parañaque City was killed over a makeup kit, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian urged education officials to curb violence in school premises.
Gatchalian said similar stabbing incidents have been reported in various campuses, raising public concern about student safety and school security.
“Let us not allow violence to become normal in our schools,” Gatchalian said as he condemned violence in educational institutions.
“Now, another young life has been lost. I call on schools to strengthen security, and parents to take a more active role in instilling discipline to prevent violence,” he added.
While authorities acted swiftly and have surrendered the suspect, also a minor, to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Gatchalian stressed that swift action alone is not enough.
“Justice must be served,” Gatchalian said.
He called for stronger preventive measures, urged schools to enhance security protocols and for parents to teach their children about discipline and values.
“I sympathize with the family, friends and the entire community as we mourn the tragic loss of the victim,” the senator added.
Department of Education and local officials are expected to review safety measures and counseling support in schools in response to the growing concern.
