DOTr to probe ‘slow’ PUV consolidation

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation `yesterday vowed to look into the slow franchise consolidation under the public utility vehicle modernization program or PUVMP.

Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said he discovered that less than half of PUVs nationwide have fully complied with the consolidation program.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) previously reported a consolidation rate of 86 percent.

Of the figure, Dizon confirmed that only 43 percent of PUVs have had their consolidation applications approved.

“The remaining applications are still being processed, with some pending since 2023,” he said.

Dizon said he would review the LTFRB’s data and meet with transport groups, including Manibela, which is currently on strike.

He also hinted at modifying the PUVMP.

Dizon said he would need two weeks to determine the next steps, including the possibility of allowing unconsolidated jeepneys to renew their provisional authority to operate.

PNP: Strike peaceful

Meanwhile, the transport strike has so far been peaceful, according to the Philippine National Police, which deployed 48,500 PNP personnel to ensure public safety.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said 1,400 of their mobility assets are providing free rides for stranded commuters.

In Quezon City, 450 police personnel are on the ground securing areas where protest actions are being held by Manibela.
