Orbos named PTV general manager

MANILA, Philippines — A former Cabinet official has been designated as officer-in-charge general manager of the state-run People’s Television Network Inc. (PTNI).
Former executive secretary Oscar Orbos, who was named PTNI chairman in October last year, has agreed to be the general manager of the government station, according to Presidential Communications Secretary Jay Ruiz.
“We are just preparing the (appointment) papers. We are looking at the legalities,” Ruiz said on Monday.
Orbos, who also served as transportation and communications secretary from 1990 to 1991, will replace Antonio Nebrida Jr.
Ruiz said Orbos does not intend to stay long in the post because of his age.
Orbos was former representative of Pangasinan’s first district from 1987 to 1990. He was the governor of the province from 1995 to 1998.
In 1998, Orbos ran for vice president, but lost to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Orbos was also a host of GMA Network’s “Debate with Mare at Pare” alongside economics professor Solita Monsod.
Ruiz announced Orbos’ designation days after Malacañang ordered all appointees in agencies, offices and bureaus under the PCO to submit their courtesy resignations.
