Bomb planted in car of STAR photojournalist
MANILA, Philippines — Police are investigating the bombing of the car of The STAR photojournalist Michael Varcas outside his residence in Barangay Pinyahan in Quezon City on Feb. 18.
The Kamuning police said investigators are looking for leads to identify the two men who planted an improvised explosive device on Varcas’ car.
In a report, police said the explosion occurred at 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators recovered fragments of what appeared to be an improvised Molotov bomb.
Varcas told reporters yesterday that he heard a motorcycle arriving in front of his apartment before the explosion. He said he thought at first that they were robbers, but reconsidered after they left the place.
“Then I heard a loud explosion. When I checked, my car was already on fire,” Varcas said in Filipino.
Closed-circuit television footage showed two people at the scence, with one of them putting the explosive under the left side of the car.
Varcas is not discounting the possibility that the attack could be connected with some of the pictures he has taken, which have generated reactions from netizens.
He urged the police and other law enforcement agencies to hold accountable the people responsible for the incident.
