COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Four suspected smugglers including two alleged members of law enforcement agencies were arrested after their van loaded with cigarettes rolled over during a pursuit operation in General Santos City yesterday morning.

Reports said that police pulled over the suspects’ vehicle for a routine inspection at a checkpoint of the Commission on Elections in Maasim, Sarangani.

Instead of pulling over, the suspects sped away, prompting the police to pursue them.

The van rolled over as it was traveling in Barangay Apopong, causing the cargo to be thrown out of the vehicle.

Police found in the van large boxes containing cigarettes made in Indonesia.

The cargo was supposed to be delivered to shops in General Santos City.

Probers said the driver of the van is a member of the police highway patrol unit. An unlicensed gun was seized from him.

Another suspect said he is a member of the Philippine Coast Guard.
