Maynilad joins oil leak cleanup in Laguna river

MANILA, Philippines — Maynilad Water Services Inc. has joined a cleanup activity in the San Isidro River in San Pedro, Laguna, where an oil leak occurred last month.
Maynilad said the oil leak, caused by a fire that struck a private company, was contained before it could reach Laguna de Bay.
A full cleanup is necessary to prevent contamination during heavy rain, it said.
The water concessionaire deployed vacuum trucks in the area following a request from the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA).
It said more than 128,400 liters of oil were extracted from the river.
The oil was placed in 104 drums also provided by Maynilad.
For post-cleanup washing, the company deployed water tankers operated by its employees, who worked continuously, including during Sundays and holidays to speed up the cleanup.
Maynilad officials gave assurance that the water concessionaire would continue to provide necessary support to the LLDA, the Philippine Coast Guard and other agencies in mitigating effects of the oil leak.
Laguna de Bay is a vital water source for Metro Manila residents.
