1,045 soldiers to secure elections in Negros

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Up to 1,045 soldiers will be deployed in Negros Occidental to secure the May 12 elections, the military said yesterday.

The Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade (303IB) based in the province said soldiers would secure candidates, electorates and poll workers.

Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, chief of the 303IB, said the Army is ready to thwart any threat to the elections, including from the New People’s Army.

“We will track down those who plan to disrupt the elections,” Dumosmog said.

Col. Rainerio de Chavez, Negros Occidental police director, said that risk assessments of more than 700 poll candidates in the province are ongoing.

Chavez said that as of yesterday, Negros Occidental remained under the “green category” or areas with no election-related concerns.

The provincial joint security coordinating center – composed of officials of the Commission on Elections, the Army, police and Philippine Coast Guard – will meet on Feb. 18 to discuss election-related issues and validate possible election areas of concern.
