1 PDL dead, 2 hurt in Billibid stabbing incident
MANILA, Philippines — A person deprived of liberty (PDL) died following a stabbing incident at the New Bilibid Prison, the Bureau of Corrections said.
In a statement on Thursday, January 2, the bureau said the stabbing incident occurred at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison, where two others were also injured.
Prison officials said the stabbing took place at 7:15 a.m. in a specific area within the compound, according to a report by Acting Superintendent Corrections Chief Inspector Roger Boncales.
The bureau also said it will not publicly identify the PDLs involved in the incident until their families have been notified.
To prevent further incidents while the stabbing investigation is ongoing, the Bureau has instructed all prison and penal farm superintendents to implement enhanced security measures at their respective facilities.
“To prevent any untoward incident while the incident is being investigated, the Bucor Head Quarters directed all superintendents of operating and prison farms to take precautionary measure at their respective OPPFs to ensure the safety of both PDLs and staff,” the bureau’s statement read.
An investigation into the incident is also currently underway.
