MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued over a thousand summons against erring motorists since the start of the year in line with stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regulations in the country.

A total of 1,126 show cause orders (SCOs) on different violations, including cases of road rage that went viral on social media, have been issued since January, according to the LTO.

Of the figure, 508 SCOs were issued for violation of Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, which includes improper person to operate a motor vehicle; 448 were due to the use of fake licenses; 74 related to the Anti-Distracted Driving Act; 69 related to road incidents reported to the LTO Central Command Center and 27 related to double license.

“This only proves that your LTO is now very active not only in responding to the complaints of the road users, but also on our own initiative of expanding and improving our monitoring system against erring motorists,” LTO Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II said.

The LTO has meted penalties commensurate to the violations, including suspension of driver’s license and motor vehicle registration, and even revocation of the driver’s license.

The agency noted that it aims to improve its active response in social media monitoring of traffic violations alongside regular operations and checkpoints.

“Active social media monitoring, and even active monitoring of the traditional media, in our efforts to perform the LTO’s mandate of ensuring road safety, is one of the new normal in the agency,” Mendoza said.
