Quake jolts Surigao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted the province of Surigao del Norte yesterday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 2:42 a.m. and its epicenter was located 35 kilometers south of General Luna town.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, was felt at Intensity 4 in Claver, Dapa, Del Carmen, General Luna and San Isidro in Surigao del Norte.

Intensity I was felt in Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.

State seismologists said Instrumental Intensity 3 was recorded in Tandag, Surigao del Norte. Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Mambajao in Camiguin, Cebu, Dulag in Leyte, Gingoog in Misamis Oriental and Sogod in Southern Leyte.

The quake was not expected to cause damage to property, but it may generate aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
