Senate tightens security amid bomb threat
MANILA, Philippines — Stricter security measures have been enforced at the Senate following a bomb threat issued on social media.
“While it was not considered as a credible and serious threat, the Senate Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms is taking the necessary precautions,” Senate President Francis Escudero said.
A social media user on Tuesday posted that a bomb had been planted at the Senate building.
“There is a bomb there. It can explode there in your place anytime. Take action. Talk to me personally, you’ll know why,” the post read.
The bomb threat was most likely made by a prankster, Senate secretary Renato Bantug Jr. said.
Vehicles of Senate employees and visitors were screened yesterday.
Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri said senators were not informed about the bomb threat.
“Is it related to the national budget? I hope it’s not,” he said.
