MANILA, Philippines — Up to 50 applications for amnesty filed by former communist insurgents and violent extremists are expected to be approved before the end of the year, according to the National Amnesty Commission.

NAC Commissioner Jamar Kulayan said the agency is reviewing 50 amnesty applications, which will be recommended for approval by President Marcos this month.

On Thursday, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. said the government have received 1,620 amnesty applications since March.

Galvez said the applications were filed in 19 local amnesty boards in Basilan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato and Sulu as well as National Capital Region.

As of Nov. 29, former New People’s Army guerrillas topped the list of applicants with 1,018 followed by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front with 343 and Moro National Liberation Front with 240. The rest are former members of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade.

Kulayan said the number of amnesty applications filed by former communist guerrillas is “within the target” of the NAC.
