Philippines hosting international conference on women, peace, security

MANILA, Philippines — Two women legislators will lead the Philippine delegation to the International Conference for Women, Peace and Security, to be held in Pasay.

Sen. Loren Legarda and Pangasinan 3rd District Rep. Maria Rachel Arenas will be on the frontline as the country hosts the conference for the first time, from Oct. 28 to 30, at the Philippine International Convention Center.

“As a country with a diverse culture and rich history of resilience, the Philippines is positioned to lead discussions on the intersection of gender security and sustainable development,” Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay media forum.

Parliamentarians, ministers and advocates from countries in Africa, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the Asia-Pacific are expected to attend the event.

“The conference is a chance to elevate women’s voices and foster partnerships among governments, civil societies and international organizations,” Pangandaman said.

“Our national action plan for women, peace and security is a bold declaration of our unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s crucial role in shaping our future,” Pangandaman added.

Peace agreements “tend to last longer” if women are involved, she said. Presidential peace adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. agreed.

Funding for the peace process will be discussed by Pangandaman during the conference.

She noted that necessary funds for Marawi City’s rehabilitation were only provided under the Marcos administration.

“The pie does not show a big chunk of the budget (for women and security),” Pangandaman said.
