MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 117,372 cases of influenza-like illness or ILI in the country.

Citing reports from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14, the DOH said the figure is 15 percent lower when compared to the record (137,980) for the same period last year.

It added that 126 deaths due to ILI were reported this year – an 11 percent reduction in fatalities compared to the 142 deaths during the same period in 2023.

In a statement, the DOH said it is expediting the procurement of flu vaccines even with the slowdown in ILI cases nationwide, stressing that sustained prevention is needed to sustain the downtrend.

To prevent ILI, the DOH reiterated the importance of regular hand washing, proper mask-wearing in crowded places and timely vaccination.

“These practices are vital for reducing infection risk as the flu season continues,” the DOH said.

It also stressed the need for early consultation and reporting of cases to prevent potential complications.

“While the nationwide decline in flu-like cases is a positive sign, we must remain proactive. We cannot afford to be complacent,” Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said. “Prevention, early detection and vaccination are our strongest defenses against this illness.”
