MANILA, Philippines — The Malabon local government on Tuesday inaugurated two pumping stations, to help mitigate floods during storms and high tides.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval led the inauguration of the pumping stations in Barangays Baritan and Tañong.

The facilities will improve the city government’s capability to manage flooding, Sandoval said.

According to the city engineering department, both stations have a pumping capacity of 0.3 cubic meters per second and will operate in six-hour cycles with one hour idle time.

The older mechanical pumps in Barangays Baritan and Tañong have a lower capacity of 0.1 cubic meters and longer idle time, city hall said.

The Sto. Rosario II Pumping Station, costing P9.99 million, covers a catchment area of 18,377 square meters and is expected to benefit around 1,000 residents in Barangay Baritan.

The Dulong Adante Pumping Station in Barangay Tañong, which received funding of P16.627 million, covers a catchment area of 19,917 square meters.
