ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines —  Strong waves spawned by the southwest monsoon destroyed at least 17 houses in Barangays Maasin and San Jose Cawa-Cawa, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported yesterday.

Although the CDRRMO said no one was reported hurt in the tidal surges, at least 45 families with 245 members were forced to evacuate to safer ground.
