MANILA, Philippines — A sport utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into barriers along the EDSA bus lane in Quezon City yesterday.

Rescuers suspected that the driver, who looked South Asian, had suffered a heart attack, which caused him to lose control of the steering wheel at around 8:34 a.m. near the People Power monument.

Rescuers broke the car’s window to pull out the motorist who was stuck in the SUV.

The unidentified driver was brought to the Medical City in Pasig for treatment.

The left side of the car’s hood and bumper were damaged, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

As a result of the crash, the MMDA said plastic and concrete barriers as well as traffic signs along the EDSA busway were destroyed.

The SUV with license plates NBP 1531 blocked the busway, forcing buses and ambulances to use the other lanes, according to the Department of Transportation’s Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation.

The incident caused traffic jams in the area and reached as far as EDSA-Ayala Avenue in Makati, according to the MMDA.

Personnel from the MMDA’s road safety unit towed the car from the area at past 9 a.m.
