MANILA, Philippines — Surfing spot Siargao has been recognized as the best place to visit in Southeast Asia by foreign travel website Lonely Planet.

“The island off the mainland of Surigao del Norte is a tropical paradise known for its quality surfing, and is regarded as one of the best waves in the world,” an article posted on the travel website on July 10 said.

The article also recommended to tourists to try several activities such as surfing lessons for beginners, watching live musical performances, island exploration on a motorcycle, spelunking or visiting caves, yoga classes and ice bathing.

“By staying at least a week in Siargao, you’ll be able to experience the best of the island and explore beyond the main town,” the article added.

Aside from Siargao, the Lonely Planet named Amed in Bali, Indonesia as best for diving and snorkeling, Cao Bang in Vietnam for getting off the beaten path, Khao Sok National Park in Thailand for animal lovers, Luang Prabang in Laos for Buddhist culture experience, Penang in Malaysia for history and culture, and Gili Air in Indonesia as best for relaxation.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco thanked Lonely Planet for the accolade, saying it “reflects the indisputable beauty of Siargao, from its famous surfing spots to its pristine beaches and lively local culture.”

Frasco said the recognition would motivate the country to continue promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the natural wonders of the archipelago.
