BFAR: No medical waste dumped in sea

Bella Cariaso - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) dubbed as fake news claims on social media that people should not eat fish since medical waste was being dumped into the sea.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, BFAR asked netizens to refrain from sharing unverified social media posts.

“There... (has) been false information circulating on social media which prohibits the general public from eating fish, following an alleged dumping of medical waste…(into the) sea, specifically a tube from a hospital with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The (BFAR) strongly counters this claim as the information is not true,” the agency said.

The World Health Organization has said that HIV is spread from the body fluids of an infected person, including blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids, and it is not spread by kisses, hugs or sharing food.

“We urge everyone to stay vigilant and always verify the source of information before sharing any social media posts,” the BFAR said.
