Roads shut down in Cordileras

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Several major roads in the Cordillera highlands were shut down as torrential rains brought by Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon battered most of the region.

In Benguet, Kennon Road in Tuba town has been closed to all types of vehicles since Tuesday afternoon as clearing operations went on.

On Tuesday morning, a landslide occurred at Millsite in Camp 6, Barangay Camp 4 in Tuba.

The Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay Development Authority declared Kennon Road impassable as soil, rocks and boulders continued to roll down from the mountains to various areas along the road network.

The Bued River became swollen from continuous rains since Monday.

A portion of Halsema or Baguio-Bontoc Road, particularly Kilometer 48, was closed starting Tuesday due to fallen trees along the stretch of the highway from Benguet to Mountain Province.

Kilometers 46 and 49 along the Baguio-Bontoc Road, particularly in Atok, Benguet, was declared impassable to large vehicles.

The Amburayan-Boneng Road in Kapangan near the Amburayan River was also deemed impassable as clearing operations have not been completed.

The Induyan-Alno Provincial Road in La Trinidad, Benguet and some municipal road systems in Itogon were still impassable as of yesterday morning.

In Abra, only motorcycles can pass along some roads in Boliney, Danglas, Lagayan, Peñarrubia, San Isidro and Tubo towns, especially those near the waterways. Clearing operations are ongoing.

Fallen trees affected major power lines in Baguio City. The Benguet Electric Cooperative deployed linemen to check on the lines, advising consumers to consider these cables energized to avoid accidents.
