MANILA, Philippines — Four Indian nationals were rescued in Las Piñas City after they were reportedly kidnapped and illegally detained by their compatriots for their failure to pay P200,000 in car accident settlement.

In a report yesterday, the Southern Police District said the victims aged 19 to 22 were rescued in a residential building in Barangay Pamplona Tres on July 5.

Police said the operation led to the arrest of four suspects, also Indian nationals, identified only as Devesh, Ramanathan, Sanjay and Venkata.

Two other suspects escaped.

Investigation showed that the victims rented from the suspects a Nissan Terra, which was involved in an accident in Nasugbu, Batangas on May 24.

Police said one of the suspects demanded P700,000 for damages, but the victims were able to pay only P500,000.

The suspects allegedly withdrew P120,000 from the victims’ ATM cards and took a cell phone worth P55,000, according to police.
