Makati school hit by fire ahead of opening of classes

MANILA, Philippines — A fire that reached second alarm broke out at San Jose Elementary School in Makati on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Makati, the fire was reported at 4:35 p.m. and reached second alarm less than 20 minutes later.

The blaze was put out at 5:38 p.m.

In an ABS-CBN report, school principal Lev Dacanay said five classrooms on the second floor and one on the third floor were damaged by the fire.

No one was in the school during the fire, except for the security guard stationed on the ground floor of the building, he added.

Classes at the school are set to start on July 27, but a learning camp scheduled today will be postponed, officials said.

The BFP has yet to give information as to the cause of the fire.
