MANILA, Philippines — Despite the recent elevated gas emission, Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental remains under alert Level 2, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol yesterday said state seismologists could not yet increase the alert level as they were still monitoring the volcano’s activity.

“Sometimes it is high, sometimes it is low,” Bacolcol said, referring to Kanlaon’s gas emission.

He said the volcano spewed at least 5,397 tons of sulfur dioxide, the highest since 2017, and generated 14 earthquakes.

“If the increase (in sulfur dioxide emission) will be consistent, we have to raise the alert level, but for now, we have to assess this on a day-to-day basis,” Bacolcol said.

He said the 14 volcanic earthquakes recorded within the 24-hour period were weak and could only be detected by Phivolcs’ instruments.

Meanwhile, state seismologists recorded two phreatic eruptions in Taal Volcano in Batangas on Saturday.
