MANILA, Philippines — Prosecutors yesterday presented evidence and the first witness on the first day of the murder trial of expelled Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. in Manila.
Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo, widow of governor Roel Degamo whose assassination was allegedly masterminded by Teves, attended the trial at the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 51.
Teves is in Timor-Leste where he is facing extradition proceedings.
Teves’ co-accused Marvin Miranda was arraigned. He did not enter a plea, prompting the court to enter a not guilty plea.
Other defendants Angelo and Jay Ann Palagtiw pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors, lawyers and Degamo refused to speak with the media after the hearing due to a supposed gag order issued by Presiding Judge Merianthe Pacita Zuraek.
