MANILA, Philippines — With the annual increase in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases, the Marcos administration will construct a P2.3-billion hemodialysis center at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City.

Speaker Martin Romualdez led yesterday the ground breaking for the 13-floor facility, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art machines and manned by specialists and trained personnel.

“Today, we are not just building an edifice. We are laying the foundation for hope, modern healthcare and better quality of life for millions of Filipinos suffering from kidney ailments,” he said.

Romualdez said the project is a continuation of the “Legacy Specialty Hospital” program of the Marcos administration.

According to NKTI executive director Rose Marie Rosete-Liquete, there has been an increase of nearly 412 percent in ESRD cases annually.

This rise in the cases of kidney diseases highlights the need for such a facility, Liquete said.
