Due to damaged floodgate
MANILA, Philippines — Several barangays in Malabon and Navotas are experiencing flooding due to the damaged navigational gate of the Malabon-Navotas River.
The floodgate located in Barangay Tanza Uno, Navotas was damaged after a barge passed through even during low tide on June 7, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
Local officials of Malabon and Navotas on Monday met with the MMDA and Department of Public Works and Highways to address the problem.
Acting MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said they are planning to lift the damaged floodgate using a crane.
“The problem is that the navigational gate could not be fully raised. This allows water to enter during high tide, causing floods in Malabon and Navotas,” Artes said.
The flooded barangays in Malabon are Concepcion, Dampalit, Hulong Duhat and parts of Tañong, according to Mayor Jeannie Sandoval.
She said the city government initiated flood mitigation measures to ensure the safety of residents.
Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco emphasized the importance of the navigational gate for both cities.
Tiangco said residents near the dike and shipyard in Barangay Tanza are experiencing flooding.
As a temporary solution, the Navotas government is using sandbagging in low-lying areas to prevent floods.
