MANILA, Philippines — The water level in Angat Dam in Bulacan dropped by 35 centimeters yesterday despite rains spawned by the southwest monsoon or habagat in the past few days.

As of 8 a.m. yesterday, Angat’s elevation was down to 176.62 meters from the previous 176.97.

The elevation was 33.38 meters below the dam’s normal high water level of 210 and 3.38 meters lower than its minimum operating level of 180.

Patrick Dizon, water and sewerage management department manager at the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, said the large decrease in Angat’s water level was an isolated case.

Dizon said the average drop in the dam’s water level in the last five days was only 15 centimeters per day.

Angat Dam supplies more than 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water needs, and provides for the irrigation needs of 25,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga.
