MANILA, Philippines — Investigators of the Philippine National Police (PNP) can now examine the contents of the communication equipment and other gadgets seized from a Chinese man, suspected to be a spy, who was arrested in Makati City last month.

The Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 148 has issued a warrant to disclose computer data (WDCD), which authorizes the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to conduct a forensic examination on the equipment seized from Yuhang Liu.

Liu was arrested last May for illegal possession of a firearm and suspected communication hacking devices in Barangay San Isidro.

Col. Jean Fajardo, the PNP’s public information office chief, said the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) is the unit tasked to examine the equipment seized from Liu.

“The next step is (for the CIDG) to endorse the approved cyber warrants to the ACG,”  Fajardo said in a news briefing at Camp Crame.

An ACG official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they have yet to receive a copy of the endorsement letter as of yesterday afternoon.

A certification secured by the PNP from the National Telecommunications Commission showed that Liu is not authorized to possess the equipment seized from his vehicle in Makati and condominium in Parañaque.

The suspect is detained under heavy security at Camp Crame.
