MANILA, Philippines — The Chinese man who was held with hacking devices and suspected to be engaged in spying has been transferred to the Philippine National Police (PNP) detention facility at Camp Crame.

Yuhang Liu was moved to the PNP Custodial Center from the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, PNP chief information officer Col. Jean Fajardo said yesterday.

Fajardo said Liu’s transfer to the PNP’s most fortified detention facility is meant to ensure that he is “safe as an investigation into his illegal activities is ongoing.”

The suspect was arrested in Makati last week after he was caught with communication equipment and other gadgets believed to be used in hacking.

Fajardo said a certification from the National Telecommunications Commission showed that Liu is not authorized to possess the communication equipment seized from his vehicle and condominium unit in Parañaque.

Fajardo said the PNP would apply for a warrant to search, seize and examine computer data so that probers can scrutinize the contents of Liu’s equipment.
