BI nabs 37 Chinese for illegal businesses

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines —  The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested 37 Chinese in Parañaque on June 4 for allegedly engaging in illegal retail businesses.

BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the Chinese – 30 men and seven women – had tourist, not work, visas.

“They are improperly documented. If they intended to work in the Philippines, they should have applied for a 9G or pre-arranged employment visa,” Sandoval said.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the arrests stemmed from intelligence reports received by his office about foreigners working illegally in Multinational Village subdivision.

Sandoval said they suspect that the 37 Chinese “have long been doing businesses in the country since their businesses appeared to be established.”

All 37 Chinese are being held in the BI’s detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa pending the resolution of the deportation cases to be filed against them.
