MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Marbil has ordered a review of the mandatory removal of visible tattoos among PNP members.

Potential health and medical issues have been raised with Marbil, especially for police personnel with underlying conditions that could be affected by tattoo removal procedures, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said at a press briefing yesterday.

“The review was prompted by these health considerations, with the chief PNP directing the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management to thoroughly study the implementation process,” Fajardo said.

This includes assessing the impact on police personnel’s health and ensuring that any tattoo removal procedures are conducted at their own expense, she said.

Former PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. signed the memorandum circular, prohibiting police officers from sporting revealing tattoos.

The circular took effect on April 20.

Fajardo clarified that while the review is underway, the policy remains for new entrants into the PNP and the Philippine National Police Academy.
