Magalong warns water firms of overpricing

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong has warned local water delivery companies against overpricing and taking advantage of the high demand amid supply shortage.

Magalong said he received reports that some water delivery firms have increased their rates to P80 per drum, which is double the usual price of P40.

“This is unacceptable, unethical and immoral. You cannot take advantage of the people’s misery and suffering,” Magalong said.

Other complaints included unfair practices by some companies, such as prioritizing businesses and households with large orders over ordinary residents.

Magalong warned the city government would cancel the permits of companies caught engaging in unfair practices.

“We will also have their deep well operation permits canceled by the National Water Resources Board,” he said.

The city government is working closely with the Baguio Water District (BWD) to remedy the water shortage caused by the El Niño phenomenon and dry season.

BWD general manager Salvador Royeca said thal local water sources have been experiencing a seasonal decline since December.

Royeca said the BWD is working hard to complete its ongoing drilling projects, which were started in the previous years to prepare for El Niño.  She said new deep wells would be activated by May.
