MANILA, Philippines — Eight male inmates of the Manila City Jail (MCJ) were hurt after a brawl erupted yesterday afternoon.

Members of the Commando and Bahala Na criminal gangs threw at each other pieces of hollow blocks, taken from construction sites near the jail, during the brawl that started before 2 p.m., according to MCJ spokesman Jail Officer 1 Elmar Jacobe.

Six members of the Commando gang and two Bahala Na gang members were given first aid treatment for injuries they sustained, he told reporters.

The clash ended before 2:20 p.m., Jacobe said.

Visits to the city jail’s male dormitory were suspended while the facility was padlocked immediately after the fight, according to radio reports.

The city jail would launch an investigation of the incident and conduct an inspection of inmates’ cells for contraband.

The brawl could have stemmed from an ongoing sports fest in the MCJ, according to reports.
