MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has cautioned the public against eating halo-halo to fight off the scorching summer heat.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said halo-halo has ingredients that can be easily contaminated and cause illness.

“Watch out in eating halo-halo this summer season. Diarrhea cases are increasing,” Herbosa said during yesterday’s Kapihan sa Manila Bay media forum.

Herbosa issued the warning following reports that several Kidapawan City residents fell ill after eating halo-halo.

The DOH has yet to confirm the reports, but Herbosa said he will not be surprised as such incidents are common during the summer season.

Bacteria can grow in sweet ingredients and cause contamination, especially if those are left exposed to summer heat, he noted.

“It could be contaminated and cause acute gastroenteritis,” he added, stressing the importance of ensuring that the ice to be used in making halo-halo is clean.

The milk needs to be refrigerated at all times to avoid spoilage, he said.

Glasses and other utensils, as well as the hands of people preparing the dessert, must also be clean, he added.

Herbosa also cautioned against swimming in public pools, as unclean water can cause skin diseases and diarrhea if a person accidentally ingests contaminated water.
