BACOLOD CITY , Philippines —  The Negros Occidental provincial health office is campaigning for the use of face masks amid the threat of pertussis or ”whooping cough.”

Provincial health officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan has confirmed that a two-month-old baby was treated for suspected pertussis at a government hospital in this city.

Pinongan called on Negrenses to be vigilant against pertussis, saying those who are experiencing whooping cough or difficulty in breathing should seek treatment.

Aside from wearing face masks, Pinongan said preventive measures, such as respiratory hygiene and hand washing with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizer should be practiced.
