MANILA, Philippines – The Dutertes’ recent call for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to resign would not only be self-serving but is also a demonstration of a desire for power, according to labor leader Leody De Guzman.

In a Facebook post, the labor leader known as “Ka Leody” slammed the recent tirades of former President Rodrigo Duterte and son and Davao mayor Sebastian Duterte against Marcos, saying that it was a “naked display of self-interest.”

“Hindi pagmamahal sa bayan ang pinagmumulan ni meyor Baste Duterte sa kanyang hamon kay BBM kundi pag-ibig sa kapangyarihan,” De Guzman said in his post.

In a sign of a deepening rift between the two camps, Sebastian Duterte recently called for Marcos’ resignation.

“Mr. President, if you do not have love and aspirations for your country, resign,” Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said in a speech last Sunday at the Hakbang ug Maisug Leaders Forum in Davao City.

Marcos has since fired back at his predecessor.

De Guzman, however, believes the Dutertes just want Vice President Sara Duterte to assume the presidency through constitutional succession with Marcos stepping down.

“‘Self serving’ nga ang panukala ni Baste na mag-resign si BBM. Dahil ang ibig sabihin nito ay aandar ang 'constitutional succession' at ang kanyang kapatid na si Sara ang awtomatikong hinirangin bilang pangulo!” he said. – With a report from AFP
