ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A gun ban will be enforced in this city for 10 days in connection with the celebration of the Dinagyang Festival.

The suspension of permits to transport and carry firearms outside of residence will be implemented starting tomorrow until Jan. 29.

City police chief Col. Joeresty Coronica said the gun ban is provided under a memorandum issued by Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda on Tuesday.

Only members of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcement agencies performing official duties and wearing agency-prescribed uniform are allowed to carry firearms.

Coronica said carrying sharp objects, deadly weapons and other contraband is also prohibited.

“The gun ban will be strictly enforced across all festival venues, procession routes and related events,” he said.

Police will conduct security checks to ensure compliance with the gun ban.

The anti-smoking ordinance and other city laws will likewise be enforced.

“We are ensuring a firearm-free Dinagyang Festival. Let’s celebrate together in harmony, respecting safety measures for a secure and enjoyable time while we honor Señor Sto. Niño,” Coronica said.

A gun ban had earlier been enforced in Kalibo, Aklan from Jan. 15 to 21 for the celebration of the Ati-Atihan Festival.
