COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A farmer was killed while his five companions were wounded when a grenade exploded in Barangay Pilar in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur before dawn on Friday.

Nestor Amborgo Jr., 37, died at the scene, Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director, told reporters yesterday, citing a report from the South Upi police.

Jemvoy Denuman, 47; Alvin Causrin, 38; Jimrod Mutiha, 41; Jem Amborgo, 30, and Joem Sentina, 34, were wounded. They remained confined in a hospital yesterday.

The six were drinking liquor in Sitio Mafran when the grenade exploded, according to initial reports.

Police and Army ordnance experts said fragments of a 40-millimeter grenade projectile were recovered at the scene.

Probers said the projectile is believed fired from a distance using an M79 launcher or an M203 rifle.
