‘Crime boss’ slain in shootout
MANILA, Philippines — A suspected leader of a criminal gang involved in contract killings and other activities in Metro Manila and Calabarzon was killed in an alleged shootout in Bacoor City, Cavite yesterday.
The suspect, Gelbirth Puerto, 30, was killed after he reportedly clashed with Quezon City Police District operatives in Barangay Molino III at around 1:30 a.m., QCPD director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said.
Maranan said police officers intercepted Puerto while driving a Honda Click motorcycle in front of a residential compound.
The suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire at the policemen, who retaliated.
Puerto was killed while there were no casualties among the policemen. A .45 caliber handgun was recovered from him.
Maranan alleged that Puerto was the leader of the Bayawak criminal gang, which is involved in killings and robberies targeting commercial establishments in Metro Manila and Calabarzon.
“I would like to assure the public that QCPD will continue to monitor and locate those who are involved in the series of robbery incidents in the city,” the police official said in a statement.
