Abby: Makati to still serve ‘EMBO’ students

Neil Jayson Servallos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government will continue to provide services to the 45,000 students of “embo” barangays that have since been declared a part of Taguig, Makati Mayor Abby Binay said yesterday.

The distribution of school supplies last week is just among the services Makati would continue giving its former residents, she said.

Binay also thanked Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte for allowing the Makati City government to distribute supplies to public schools in the “embo” barangays.

She also defended the parents and students who lamented the barangays’ transfer to Taguig.

“To be fair, they were asked what they can say about the school supplies provided by Taguig. Naturally, they will tell the truth. They are accustomed to abundant, high-quality, and long-lasting goods. Just handing out the old but not broken. That’s how good the shoes and bags we give are,” Binay wrote in her column in Pilipino Star Ngayon.

“Everyone is free to express their opinion. And in this matter, I see only one thing: they are not happy. They still want the quality of service they experienced and tasted in Makati,” she added.

In April, the Supreme Court (SC) declared with finality that Taguig has jurisdiction over the 729-hectare Bonifacio Global City and several barangays.

While the SC’s court administrator said Taguig needs to secure a writ of execution to enforce the ruling, Taguig maintains there is no need for it.
