Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A policeman who was caught hitting a man with his service firearm has been relieved from his post.

The policeman, whose identity was withheld, is facing charges of frustrated homicide aside from administrative cases over the incident.

Cavite police director Col. Christopher Olazo said the policeman, who was assigned in Tagaytay City, was placed under restrictive custody.

Footage of closed-circuit television camera at the scene has gone viral.

It showed the policeman, who was in civilian clothes, confronting a man then pointing the gun at him and hitting him on the head several times.

Probers said the incident occurred in front of a barangay hall in Dasmariñas City.

Olazo said the policeman may be dismissed from the service.

“To our chiefs of police, let us religiously remind our personnel to practice maximum tolerance and respect for the human rights of everyone. They should refrain from engaging in any illegal activity,” he said in a statement.
