MANILA, Philippines – The time has come for the public, relevant authorities and all stakeholders to take immediate action and prioritize preparedness for the impending water shortage crisis as the water level of Angat Dam has reached critically low.

According to Rep. Eric Martinez (2nd District, Valenzuela), Angat Dam — which supplies over 90% of Metro Manila's water needs — dipping below the minimum operating level of 180 meters serves as a “wake-up call for the urgent need for long-term solutions and comprehensive strategies to mitigate the impact of the impending El Niño and ensure the well-being of our communities.”

"Warning bells have sounded. With no rains in sight and the El Niño scenario in effect, NCR should prepare well. 'Every drop counts.' These words highlight the seriousness of the situation, and therefore the importance of proactive measures to address the imminent challenges," the lawmaker said as the dam reached the alarmingly low water level.

Last May, Martinez, also the vice-chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations, alluded to the economic impact of the looming El Niño, and how the water crisis in Metro Manila will affect the country.

"A waterless NCR will hamper economic activity," said Martinez. And consequently, added that “our actions should be, clear, definitive and quick."

Recognizing the potential impact on households, agriculture and various sectors, the lawmaker cited the need for a collective effort to conserve water, implement water-saving practices, and explore alternative sources to ensure sustainability.

"We must face this challenge head-on and strive for long-term solutions that go beyond temporary measures," he continued.

Meanwhile, Martinez made assurance that he will work closely with relevant government agencies, local authorities, and concerned stakeholders to develop an integrated action plan to tackle the challenges posed by the impending water shortage.
