Go inaugurates Ormoc sports facility

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — In support of sports and youth development at the grassroots level, Sen. Bong Go on Friday led the opening of a newly constructed pentathlon facility in Ormoc, Leyte.

The project was initiated by the city government led by Leyte 4th district Rep. Richard Gomez and his wife Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, in partnership with Go as chair and vice chair of the of the Senate committees on sports and finance, respectively.

During an inspection of the facility, which is equipped with a fencing hall, Go emphasized his support for sports and youth development, especially in the grassroots.

“Ako po’y isang sports enthusiast. Isa sa aking pangunahing adbokasiya ay sports dahil mahalagang paraan ito para magabayan ang kabataan at ilayo sila sa iligal na droga. Kaya ako, full support ako sa inyo,” Go said.

Go’s commitment to sports and youth development extends beyond the establishment of physical infrastructure.

In his speech, Go discussed an initiative he championed, which is the establishment of the National Academy of Sports in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.

“Hindi lang po mga ganitong programa ang isinusulong ko bilang chairman ng committee on sports. Mayroon din po akong naisulong noon, congresswoman pa si Ma’am Lucy. ’Yung National Academy of Sports, kung saan pwedeng mag-aral at the same time mag-training ang mga estudyante,” he said.

During his visit in Ormoc, Go led a relief distribution in Barangay Libertad for 1,065 impoverished residents including tricycle drivers, persons with disabilities, solo parents, vendors and fire victims.

He thanked the residents for their support and committed to continue working for the Filipinos.

Go and his team provided grocery packs, vitamins, masks, snacks, shirts, shoes, phones, umbrellas and sports equipment to the beneficiaries.

He urged residents facing health issues to avail themselves of the services provided in any of the 158 Malasakit Centers located across the country including five in Leyte, one of which is at the Ormoc District Hospital.
