Court resets Atio hazing case hearing

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A Manila court deferred yesterday the hearing on the death of University of Santo Tomas law student Horacio “Atio” Castillo III due to hazing in 2017.

Atio’s parents, Horacio and Carmina Castillo, expressed hope that the court would rule in their favor.

“We are hoping for a court decision within the year. It’s only a matter of time,” the Castillos, who attended the hearing, told The STAR.

The Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 11 reset the hearing to April 20 after granting the motion filed by the lawyers for one of 10 Aegis fraternity members tagged in the fatal hazing.

Six other fratmen are expected to take the witness stand, according to the couple. The rest can attend the court proceedings through video conferencing from the Manila city jail where they are detained.

The Castillos said they are convinced that the fraternity members would be found guilty for the death of Atio.

The court has dismissed the petitions of the fratmen to post bail as well as to dismiss the case.
