CHR welcomes cop’s conviction over drug war killings

Elizabeth Marcelo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has welcomed the conviction of former police officer Jeffrey Perez for the murders of Carl Angelo Arnaiz and Reynaldo “Kulot” de Guzman.

“Noting the grave nature of extrajudicial killings and abuse of power, the CHR welcomes the conviction of Perez and sees it as a triumph of the rule of law,” the commission said in a statement yesterday.

In a decision released on March 13, the Navotas Regional Trial Court Branch 287 found Perez guilty of two counts of murder.

He was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole.

The Child Rights Network said the conviction of Perez is not the end for the quest for justice for drug war victims.

“It was only the second conviction of policemen involved in brutal killings of youth under the former administration’s war on drugs. The first conviction involved the case of Kian delos Santos in 2018,” the group said. — Janvic Mateo
