Groups buck 100,000 franchise slots for TNVS

MANILA, Philippines — Transport groups are opposing the proposed opening of 100,000 franchise slots for transport network vehicle service (TNVS), citing the worsening traffic jams and impact on public utility vehicle drivers and operators.

At least seven transport groups appealed to President Marcos to reconsider opening the TNVS franchise slots.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said it is mulling opening more slots for TNVS in response to the investment pledge made by ride-hailing company Grab.

Lando Marquez, Liga ng Transportayon at mga Operators sa Pilipinas president, said the opening of more TNVS slots would worsen traffic congestion, especially in Metro Manila.

“Walang public consultation kaya umaapela tayo sa LTFRB and President Marcos,” Marquez said in a statement.

Marquez warned of possible protest actions if their side will not be heard.

Obet Martin, president of Pasang Masda, said the government should balance the concerns of all transport stakeholders, and not only one denomination.

Martin said the public has been clamoring for additional routes for mass transportation modes such as jeepneys and buses that provide cheaper fares for commuters.

Among the groups that have joined the call to oppose the TNVS franchise opening are the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide, Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations, UV Express Federation, Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations of the Philippines and STOP and Go.
