Parañaque posts 100% trash collection efficiency
MANILA, Philippines — Several barangays in Parañaque City have registered 100 percent garbage collection efficiency, according to the local government.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Olivarez said 10 of 16 barangays in the city completed the collection of garbage in their jurisdiction.
Olivarez said the other six barangays are 70 to 90 percent efficient in waste collection.
Prior to this, trash piled up along major and secondary roads as well as subdivisions in the city after the former garbage hauling contractor allegedly disabled the sewage treatment plant, which prevented the processing of trash when the new contractor took over on Jan. 1.
“The pileup was caused by the transition from the previous garbage hauling contractor,” Olivarez said.
He thanked the barangay captains for their cooperation and support, which “enabled us to solve the problem in garbage collection.”
“In fact, barangay officials have issued certifications that waste collection in their jurisdiction has returned to normal,” Olivarez added.
Metrowaste Solid Waste Management Corp. was awarded the contract amounting to P414.803 million for the collection, hauling and disposal of garbage for 2023.
“The deal was above board. We awarded the contract to the lone bidder because we would have a bigger problem without a garbage hauling contractor,” Olivarez said.
The contract price was higher by P400,000 amid the soaring cost of fuel, he said.
The notice of award was signed by Olivarez and Metrowaste president Gerry Ching on Dec. 27, 2022.
