Cory’s spiritual adviser passes away
MANILA, Philippines — Former president Corazon Aquino’s spiritual adviser Jesuit priest Catalino Arevalo died yesterday, an official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said.
“Our dear mentor and friend, Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ, whom we fondly called Fr. Revs, has passed on,” CBCP president and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David said.
“May this great teacher to whom we owe our love for theological learning and the spiritual discipline of discernment rest in the peace of God’s embrace,” David added.
Arevalo passed away at 1:45 a.m. He would have been 98 years old in three months.
The CBCP said Arevalo was named as the “Father of Asian Theology” by the Ateneo de Manila University at a convocation commemorating the feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
He was the first Asian on the Holy See’s International Theological Commission and the first convenor and founding member of the Theological Advisory Commission of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences.
In 1997, Arevalo received the Vatican’s “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” or “for Church and Pope” recognition for his distinguished service to the Catholic Church.
