Metro Manila mayors OK motorcycle lane on Commonwealth
MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Manila Council (MMC) composed of mayors in the National Capital Region yesterday approved the designation of a lane exclusive for motorcycles along Commonwealth Avenue.
During a meeting yesterday, the mayors agreed in principle to the traffic scheme to be enforced by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
The MMC, which is the policy-making body of the MMDA, will review some inconsistencies on the size of lanes at some portions of Commonwealth Avenue, which is dubbed a “killer highway.”
“The exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth will depend upon the road conditions,” MMDA Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said.
The MMDA said the outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue will be assigned solely to motorcycles. The first and second lanes will be for cyclists and public transport vehicles, respectively.
The Department of Public Works and Highways and the Quezon City government will install traffic signs along Commonwealth Avenue, from Elliptical Road to Doña Carmen Subdivision, to guide motorists.
The MMDA will start enforcing the motorcycle lane policy before the end of November.
